Philippine Diocese Reframes “Inang Magayon” Marian Devotion as Mission of Peace Amid Global Uncertainty
As conflicts persist across regions and communities continue to grapple with uncertainty, the Diocese of Legazpi, southeastern Philippines is framing this year’s “Inang Magayon” celebration as more than a traditional Marian gathering. Declared within its “Year of Mission,” the 2026 observance subtly positions local devotion as a response to a world in crisis.
At first glance, “Inang Magayon” remains familiar, processions, Eucharistic celebrations, and prayers offered in honor of “Our Lady of Salvation,” long venerated as patroness and “Heavenly Queen of Albay.” The devotion itself has deep historical roots.
The Inang Magayon celebration draws from the centuries-old devotion to Our Lady of Salvation, patroness of Albay, whose veneration dates back to the late 18th century. The image, enshrined in Joroan, Tiwi, became a focal point of faith among coastal communities who turned to Mary for protection from calamities and uncertainty.
Over time, devotion to “Ina” grew through pilgrimages, processions, and accounts of answered prayers, especially in disaster-prone areas of the province. The image was canonically crowned in 1976, affirming its place in Albayanon religious identity.
Today, “Inang Magayon” reflects an effort by the Diocese of Legazpi to connect this deep Marian tradition with contemporary expressions of culture and mission.
Yet the language of the diocesan circular dated April 19 suggests a broader horizon. It calls the faithful, in the words of Bishop Joel Z. Baylon, “to gather in solidarity in the midst of global crisis,” “to pray together as a community of devotees offering sacrifices for peace in the world,” and “to deepen devotion to Mary as a way of bearing and sharing the Gospel to all.”
This shift is subtle but significant. Marian devotion in the Philippines is often understood as deeply personal, an expression of trust, comfort, and cultural identity. In Albay, it is all these. But in framing the celebration within a “Year of Mission,” the diocese appears to be nudging the faithful outward, reimagining devotion not only as inward piety but as communal witness.
The structure of the celebration reinforces this movement. A motorcade from Tiwi to Legazpi City, followed by a Marian procession and Mass, traces both physical and symbolic pathways, bringing the image of Mary closer to communities, rather than waiting for devotees to come. The subsequent “Visita Salvación,” which carries the image across vicariates, extends this outreach, embedding devotion in everyday spaces.
In a province frequently exposed to natural disasters, the call to solidarity carries particular resonance. Prayer for global peace intersects with local realities of vulnerability and resilience. The faithful are invited not only to remember crises elsewhere but to interpret their own experiences through a wider lens of shared fragility.
Under the leadership of Bishop Baylon, the message is clear, if understated: devotion cannot remain enclosed. In a fractured world, even traditional practices must take on a missionary character.
“We invite all clergy, religious, and lay faithful to participate actively in these activities and to support the devotion to Ina in their respective parishes and communities,” he said in the circular, noting that further details will be communicated through parish channels.
In Albay this May, the figure of Mary will once again be carried through the streets and parishes. But the invitation goes further, beyond ritual, beyond region, toward a faith that sees prayer not as retreat, but as participation in the healing of a troubled world.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
