Philippines: Calapan Church to Lead Protest March Ahead of EDSA 40th Anniversary
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, will lead a faith-driven “Lakbayan Laban sa Katiwalian” (Journey Against Corruption), combining prayer, reflection, and civic action on Feb 25.
Church leaders said the initiative seeks to renew the spirit of EDSA by calling for integrity, accountability, and responsible governance, particularly amid concerns over alleged irregularities and negligence in flood control projects.
A Faith Journey Rooted in Prayer and Action
The day-long activity will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a prayer march from Holy Infant Academy to the Divine Word College of Calapan (DWCC). Organizers describe the “Lakbay-Protesta” as a peaceful and faith-filled expression of solidarity for truth and justice.
At 8:30 a.m., a Forum on Good Citizenship will be held at DWCC, focusing on the Christian responsibility of citizens to participate actively in nation-building and uphold moral leadership.
The event will also mark the launching of TAPAT, a new Church-backed orientation initiative aimed at forming communities to remain vigilant against corruption and government anomalies.
At 10:30 a.m., Boshopm Moises M. Cuevas of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan, will preside over the Holy Eucharist, grounding the day’s activities in prayer and spiritual discernment.
Fasting in Solidarity with the Poor
Participants will observe a “Sacrificial Fasting” at 11:30 a.m., which organizers say symbolizes solidarity with the poor who suffer when public resources are misused.
In the afternoon, participants will proceed via motorcade to a local flood control project site. Church leaders said the visit aims to encourage transparency and allow the public to witness concerns raised about the project.
Youth participation will highlight the 2:00 p.m. program through spoken word performances centered on accountability and hope for ethical leadership.
The gathering will conclude at 3:00 p.m. with a Rite of Repentance, offering communal prayers for conversion of hearts, healing of the nation, and renewed commitment to honesty in public service.
Reviving the Spirit of EDSA
Event materials carry the message: “Stop the corruption / Punish the thieves of the nation” underscoring the call for justice and reform.
By linking the EDSA anniversary to present-day governance issues, the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan emphasized that People Power is not merely a historical memory but a continuing mission to defend truth, uphold human dignity, and promote the common good.
Thousands of students, Church workers, and lay faithful from across Oriental Mindoro are expected to participate in the Journey Against Corruption.
