Sri Lankan Apostolic Carmelite nun receives the National Principals’ Award 2022

Sister Mary Angelika, who received the "Guru Prathiba Prabha" award in the category of Principals from the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka.

Sister Mary Angelika, an Apostolic Carmelite nun, received the "Guru Prathiba Prabha" award in the category of Principals at the National Teachers & Principals Appreciation ceremony, which is hosted by the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka.

This event was organized on the annual International Teachers Day, which celebrates the dedication and courage of teachers and principals in the Sri Lankan school system in educating the nation's future citizens.

45 principals and 90 teachers from nine provinces of the country were felicitated at the event. Four Catholic religious were among the 45 principals. They are Brother S. C. Vijayathasan, and Sister Mary Angelika from the Northern Province, Sister Sriyapushpam AC from the Eastern Province and sister Nilanka Lancer HF from the North Western Province.

Angelika has spent over 22 years in the education ministry, initially as a teacher and subsequently as deputy principal and now as principal for seven years.

Currently, Sister Angelika is the principal of St. John Bosco Primary School, Jaffna, which is one of Sri Lanka's top primary schools for Tamil medium.

With 40 teachers and more than 1000 students, this school has the highest number of students who passed the scholarship examination in Tamil medium.

As a school administered by the Apostolic Carmel religious congregation, the school prioritizes moral and value education along with high academic calibre.

She received the award for her educational efforts during the three years of the COVID-19 Pandemic, during which she continued providing education with the guidance of the Ministry of Education and the dedication of the teachers as well as the support of the parents.

Sister Angelika described her personal vocation as forming happy, morally upright citizens who love God and others. Her inspiration comes from Albert Schweitzer who said, "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."
