Indian district-level election officials in the Northeastern state of Manipur have issued a circular to various churches, priests and pastors asking for sermons on 'ethical elections' in the churches.

A letter, dated November 1, signed by the deputy commissioner of Tamenglong District Hungyo Worshang, says, "the State legislative assembly is a few months away, and in this context, we would like to request you to dedicate a sermon on "election" as a measure to bring about ethical voting."

The letter stressed vital points to be included in the sermon like bribes during election, election as a duty to God and enrolment of voters to participate as eligible citizens and believers.

The letter also requested the church leaders to take photographs of the sermons and post them to the commissioner's social media address.

"We look forward to your continued support and assistance in the efforts of the district administration to achieve a free and fair election acceptable to all."

Catholic lay leader from Guwahati, Alan Brooks, said, "When a letter from Deputy Commissioner or District Collector is sent to every Church Head under his jurisdiction with a request to promote 'ethical voting' and to educate voters about their sacred responsibility, it speaks volumes.      Yes, we have been given the responsibility the give the good news as it was taught to us.
