40th anniversary of People Power

Children of God:
Today we mark the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
It was a historic moment when millions of Filipinos gathered peacefully to stand for truth and freedom.
Alongside the crowds on EDSA was a powerful presence of our very own Radio Veritas.
Through its broadcasts, people received updates, instructions, and encouragement.
When fear and confusion filled the air, the radio waves carried clarity and hope.
Even when transmitters were threatened and signals were cut, the message had already reached the hearts of the people.
Families huddled around their radios, listening carefully to every word.
The station became more than a source of news; it became a sign of unity.
It reminded the nation that courage could be stronger than violence.
Forty years later, we still remember how one signal helped awaken a people.
In the gospel story of Luke, Jesus addressed a crowd that kept asking him for a sign.
He called them an evil generation because they demanded more proof (Luke 11:29). He said no sign would be given except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so would the Son of Man be to that generation (Luke 11:30).
What are our inspirations for today?
First, Jesus is the sign.
The crowd in kept asking for something spectacular. They wanted dramatic proof before they would believe. Yet Jesus pointed out that a powerful sign was already standing before them.
The Ninevites responded to Jonah’s simple preaching (Luke 11:32). They did not demand miracles or extraordinary displays. They heard the warning and chose to change.
Today, we are invited to notice the signs already present in our lives. The call to conversion may come through events, people, or even crises.
Instead of demanding more proof, we are asked to respond with faith and action.
Second, openness to God’s signs.
Jesus warned that the Queen of the South would rise in judgment because she traveled far to hear Solomon’s wisdom (Luke 11:31).
Meanwhile, those who stood near Jesus failed to appreciate the greater wisdom before them.
They had access to truth but they were not open. The sign was clear, yet their hearts were closed.
Today, every generation receives its own signs of God’s presence.
The question is: do we listen?
If we ignore the signals of grace, we risk missing the opportunity for transformation.
What signs of God’s guidance have appeared in your life recently? Are there messages you keep ignoring because they challenge your comfort? How can you become more attentive to the quiet ways God speaks to you?
Children of God:
The 40th anniversary of EDSA reminds us that history can change when people recognize a decisive moment.
Radio Veritas once sent out signals that awakened courage and unity. In the same way, the gospel reveals that God continually sends signs for our conversion.
The challenge is the readiness of our hearts. Jesus stood before his generation as the greatest sign of all. Some believed, while others remained doubtful.
May we not miss the signals of grace in our time.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
