Blessed is the womb that bore Jesus!
October 11, 2025 Saturday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Joel 4:12-21; Luke 11:27-28
The concept of the “Day of the Lord” occupies our attention in the reading from the Hebrew Minor Prophet Joel. He calls it a day of harvest and summons the people to the valley of decision, for their wickedness is great. This day is accompanied by various apocalyptic signs, such as the darkening of the sun and the moon, and the heavens and the earth trembling. Yet with the Lord, nothing ends in destruction. He stands firm as a refuge for His people. He dwells on His holy mountain, Zion. Jerusalem shall be holy, and a fountain of water will flow from the house of the Lord. The oppressors of Judah will become desolate, while Judah will remain thickly populated. When the Lord God is with us, and if we place our faith and trust in Him, no one can be against us. Finally, everything depends on us! Joel challenges God’s people to rely on Him more and more.
When we eat tasty fruit, we tend to give credit to the trees. In modern times, we believe that good and branded products come from well-established companies. When Jesus impressed the crowds with His prodigious miracles and teachings, a woman recognized His greatness and credited everything to His mother: “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you.” Going beyond the tangible or physical dimensions, Jesus praises His mother Mary for her spiritual ability to hear the Word of God and obey it. As Saint Augustine says, “Mother Mary conceived Jesus first in her heart and then in her womb.” Therefore, those who truly wish to become holy must keep their inner selves pure from all kinds of stain. This can happen only when the Word of God becomes the foundation stone of our lives.
St. Pope John XXIII brought renewal and restoration to the Holy Mother Church through the convocation of the Second Vatican Council, against all odds. He relied on God. Known for his humorous style of life, he lived in the hearts of the people as Papa Buono, the Good Pope.
