Daily Readings: Daniel 6:12-28; Luke 21:20-28

We have a fascinating event reported from the reign of Darius, a Persian king. There was an interdiction in Persian Empire that people had to worship king Darius. Daniel, the prophet worshiped the God of Israel. His detractors complained that Daniel prayed to his God three times a day. In an amazing move, king Darius was determined to save Daniel but had to all the same go by the interdict. Daniel was thrown into the den of lions.  Darius prayed, “May your God, whom you faithfully serve, deliver you” (verse 16). He refused to dine and sleep. He was anxious. He rushed to the den early in the morning wishing that Daniel remained alive. Daniel confessed that God sent His angel and shut the mouths of lions. God knew that he was blameless and had done no wrong. The accusers of Daniel were eaten by the lions and Daniel was freed. Darius made a decree that Daniel’s God is the living God and all should tremble and fear before Him. He works signs and wonders. He delivers and rescues. Thus Daniel prospered during the reigns of Darius and Cyrus!

The Gospel Reading of today consists of two prophesies. One is regarding the impending historical destruction of the temple of Jerusalem and the city. The other is regarding Parousia, the Second Coming of Jesus. It is an eschatological event. When the army surrounds the city, people must abandon the city. It is a time of distress for pregnant women and nursing mothers. There will be many celestial signs involving the sun, the moon, the stars, roaring of the sea and the waves. There is no need to be afraid of all these. The believers are supposed to consider this as a perfect moment to stand up and raise their heads. It is because their redemption is drawing near. All that they are supposed to do is to be ready with full preparedness!

Call to Action: How do we understand and interpret ‘preparedness’? It calls for right and ethical living coupled with love for God and neighbour.
