Fasting and Freedom in God’s Hand

July 2, Saturday, 13th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Amos 9: 11-15 Gospel: Mathew 9:14-17

Fasting can serve as a means of strengthening our commitment to God and faith in him.

As Jesus clearly states in the gospel, the wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them. However, "The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast."

It may be helpful to examine the relationship between fasting and liberty. This may initially appear to be an odd pairing. But if people understand fasting correctly, they will see it as a way to get the wonderful gift of absolute freedom.

There are instances in life when "the bridegroom is snatched away." This refers to numerous things. Notably, we have a sense of Christ's absence in our lives.

At its core, fasting is nothing more than an act of self-denial and self-sacrifice for the glory of God. It helps us eliminate our physical and earthly wants and want Christ more with our spirits.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
