September 19, 2025 Friday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: 1 Timothy 6:2-12; 17-20; Luke 8:1-3

St. Paul, writing to Timothy, gives a stark warning about the dangers of greed and misplaced priorities. He reminds the community that godliness must never be used as a means of personal gain. Contentment with the basic necessities of life, food and clothing, is sufficient, for “we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.” The pursuit of riches, Paul cautions, leads to temptation, destruction, and a wandering away from faith. In contrast, the “man of God” is called to shun greed and embrace virtues such as righteousness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Timothy, and by extension, all disciples, must “fight the good fight of faith” and hold firmly to the eternal life promised by Christ.

In the Gospel, Luke presents Jesus traveling through towns and villages, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom. With Him are not only the Twelve but also women whose lives He had transformed, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and many others. These women, touched by Jesus’ healing and mercy, now support His mission with their resources. Their presence is striking in a patriarchal society, underscoring the inclusivity of Jesus’ ministry. They remind us that discipleship is not limited to preaching or leadership; it also involves generous service, steadfast support, and a willingness to place one’s life and resources at the service of the Gospel.

Together, these passages invite us to reflect on our own discipleship. Are we content with the essentials, or do we allow greed to pierce our hearts with “many pains”? Do we support Christ’s mission with our time, resources, and love, as the women of Luke’s Gospel did? Paul and Luke both remind us that Christian life is about fidelity, generosity, and single-minded devotion to God’s Kingdom.

Call to Action: Let us fight the good fight of faith by seeking contentment in God, rejecting greed, and joyfully supporting the mission of Christ with all that we are and all that we have.
