October 22, 2025 Wednesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Romans 6:12-18; Luke 12:39-48

St. Paul instructs the Christians in Rome that they be aware of the destructive role of sin in Christian life. What happens to followers of Christ when they obey the passions of their bodies? We should never allow sins and passions of the body to dominate us and determine our behavioural pattern. The grace of God should be the motivating force of our life. It is not the Law anymore but the grace of God that should guide our value system. It is better to be slaves of righteousness rather than of sin. No one can serve two masters. It is a matter of obedience or disobedience to the will of God. Therefore, believers have to learn to obey from the heart to the form of teaching they have received and remain steadfast in it.

The theme of vigilant waiting continues in the Gospel of reading of today. The Son of Man is bound to come at an unexpected hour and the disciples of Jesus are supposed to be vigilant and ready to serve him. Peter’s question offers an opportunity to Jesus to clarify that the onus is on every believer. The faithful servant is rewarded. He will become in charge of all the possessions of his master while the unfaithful receives severe beating. Knowing the will of the master as to what he wants and what he likes and dislikes is imperative. The conclusion of the passage puts lots of pressure on us, believers because we continue to receive numerous teachings in the form instructions that we may intently listen to them and diligently fulfil them in order to derive true joy and happiness.

Saint John Paul II led the Church at a crucial time. He helped the believers of Christ to cross the threshold of Third Millennium with faith and hope. He made efforts to recognize and appreciate their holiness and that is why he was able to canonize numerous saints.

Call to Action: The first sin of humanity was disobedience and blaming the other for one’s own fault. Even today it continues to happen as we fail to take responsibility for what we do. It is worth making an attempt to be truthful to all our actions.
