Jesus proposes an alternative culture!

August 10, 2025 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Wisdom 18:6-9; Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19; Luke 12:32-48

The Book of Wisdom was written to strengthen Israelites in Alexandria who were tempted by foreign ideologies. It recalls the Passover night, God’s deliverance for Israel and destruction for Egypt. That event revealed God’s power, justice, and fidelity.

The Letter to the Hebrews (authorship no longer attributed to Paul) addresses Jewish Christians facing persecution. Hebrews 11 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for.” Abraham’s journey—from leaving his homeland to offering Isaac, shows radical trust. Sarah conceived by faith, not merely by biology. Their story highlights God’s providence.

In the Gospel, Jesus calls His disciples a “little flock” and proposes an alternative lifestyle:

  1. Renounce possessions and give alms; store treasures in heaven.
  2. Be watchful and ready, like servants awaiting their master’s return.
  3. Live faithfully now, for the Parousia is near.

Jesus warns against neglect, self-indulgence, and abuse of authority.

Call to Action: A Christian’s life must reflect spiritual vigilance, faithful service, and detachment. It is not just future-focused but deeply rooted in meaningful living today.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
