Daily Readings: Zechariah 2:1-5, 10-11a; Psalm 31:10-13; Luke 9:43b-45
Today’s passage from the Minor Prophet Zechariah offers profound reassurance to the exiles returning from Babylon. God promises to expand Jerusalem, making it spacious enough to accommodate multitudes of people and animals. This vision is not only about physical resettlement but also about prosperity and flourishing life. Remarkably, the city will not need protective walls, for the Lord Himself will be its wall of fire, guarding His people and filling the city with His glory, His abiding presence. Addressing Jerusalem as His beloved daughter, Zion, God assures them that He will dwell among them. Yet this promise carries an even greater dimension: many nations will come and join Israel in worship. God thus broadens the horizons of His chosen people, inviting them to embrace others into His covenant love.
The Gospel reveals a contrasting scene, where the disciples still struggle to grasp the mission of Jesus. They are amazed by His mighty works, yet unable to comprehend His repeated teaching: “The Son of Man will be betrayed into human hands.” Their lack of understanding exposes the mystery of God’s plan, which surpasses human reasoning. Moreover, fear grips them, fear not born of reverence, but of confusion and reluctance to face the path of suffering that Jesus must take. This fear prevents them from drawing closer to Him.
Jesus’ destiny, however, is not limited to suffering. His passion leads to resurrection, and His resurrection prepares the way for His ascension into glory. His incarnation clothed Him with human flesh, but His resurrection clothed Him with a glorified body fit for eternity.
Both readings invite us to trust God’s plan even when mysteries confound us. His presence is our true protection, His love our true strength, and His Cross the doorway to glory.
Call to Action: The Book of Proverbs reminds us: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Let us grow in awe and reverence for God, that we may walk in true wisdom!
