Our Lady of Sorrows

September 15, Thursday,  Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows
1 Cor 15:1–11 • Ps 118:1b–2, 16ab–17, 28 • Jn 19:25–27 or Lk 2:33–35

“Mary suffered with him and thus deserve to share in his glory”

In ordinary circumstances, it is often the sons and daughters who witness their parents lose their life after illness or due to old age.  Their grief is not that heavy because this is expected. What is tragic is when it is the parents themselves who see their children dying. We cannot imagine what a mother feels watching her son suffer and is about to die. How painful must it be. She who suffered in giving birth to him also suffers with him as his life is about to end.

This is what Mary had to go through as she stood at the foot of cross watching Jesus in agony and who is about to die a horrible death. Yet Jesus, concerned about his mother, asked his faithful and beloved disciple to take care of her.

Today the Church celebrates the feast of Mary, our Lady of Sorrows. We are reminded not only of the grief that pierced Mary's heart but also her union with her son even at the last moments of his life. She suffered with him and thus deserve to share in his glory.

We remember today the mothers all over the world who, like Mary, are filled with sorrow as they witness their sons and daughters suffer and die due to violence and injustice. May Mary our Lady of sorrows be a source of consolation for them and may they experience the care and kindness of others.
