Children of God:
June 1 is the feast day of Saint Justin Martyr.
Born in Samaria to pagan parents, he studied various philosophical schools—including Platonism—before converting to Christianity around 132 AD.
He was deeply convinced that Christ was the fullness of truth he had long been searching for.
He argued that Christianity was the "true philosophy."
Instead of keeping this discovery to himself, he began teaching and defending the faith openly.
He wrote explanations of Christian beliefs addressed to Roman authorities, clarifying misunderstandings about Christians.
At a time when Christians were accused of crimes and faced persecution, Justin stood firm with reason and courage.
He engaged philosophers and officials, showing that faith and reason could go together.
Eventually, he was brought before the Roman prefect and was ordered to renounce his faith.
Justin refused, choosing loyalty to Christ over his own safety.
He declared that no one who truly knows Christ would abandon Him.
Because of this, he was sentenced to death and executed.
His witness became a powerful testimony that truth is worth everything, even one’s life.
In the gospel of Mark, Jesus told a parable about tenants who rejected and killed the servants sent by the owner, and even his beloved son.
The story revealed a pattern of rejection toward those who carried the truth.
It pointed to the fate of prophets and ultimately to Jesus himself.
“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Mark 12:10).
What can guide us today as we reflect on this?
First, those who stand for truth may face opposition, but their witness becomes the foundation for others.
Standing for truth requires courage even when it is uncomfortable.
Let us take our saint of the day as an example.
Justin Martyr stood firm even when it cost him his life.
He did not choose silence or compromise.
In our lives, we are often faced with moments where we must choose between convenience and truth.
Speaking honestly, defending what is right, or living our faith openly can be challenging.
Yet these are the moments that define our integrity.
Those who stand for truth may face opposition, but their witness becomes the foundation for others.
Second, rejection does not cancel God’s purpose in our lives.
Jesus said, “By the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes” (Mark 12:11).
This is a reminder that even rejection can become part of God’s greater plan.
The tenants in the parable rejected not only those who were sent, but even the son.
Our parable for today reveals to us the deeper truth of God’s justice and purpose.
Likewise, the death of Justin Martyr became a seed for the growth of the Church.
In our own experiences, rejection can feel painful and discouraging.
But God can transform these moments into something meaningful.
For others, even rejection can also be a re-direction.
When we remain faithful, even in difficulty, our lives become a witness that inspires others.
Rejection does not cancel God’s purpose in our lives.
As we reflect, we ask ourselves: Do I stand for truth even when it is difficult?
How do I respond when my faith is challenged or questioned? What does my life say about the truth I claim to believe?
Children of God:
The story of Justin Martyr and the message of the gospel remind us that truth is never wasted.
Even when it is rejected, it continues to bear fruit.
God’s plan often unfolds in ways we do not immediately understand.
Let us not be afraid to stand for what is true.
Only the truth can truly set us free in Christ.
