You Cannot Please Everybody

Reflection Date: May 09, 2026 | Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Daily Readings: Acts 16:1-10; John 15:18-21

Children of God:
During the time of the Roman Empire, Christians faced intense persecution for their faith.

Refusing to worship the emperor or the Roman gods was seen as an act of rebellion.

Many believers were arrested, imprisoned, and forced to choose between renouncing Christ or facing death.

Some were thrown into arenas to be torn apart by wild animals as public spectacle.

Others were burned alive, crucified, or tortured in cruel and unimaginable ways.

Families were separated, and communities lived in constant fear of betrayal and arrest.

Despite these threats, many Christians remained steadfast in their faith.

They prayed in secret, gathered quietly, and encouraged one another to remain strong.

Even in the face of death, they refused to deny Christ.

Their courage inspired others and strengthened the growing Church.

Amazing, no?

In the gospel of John, Jesus spoke clearly about the reality his followers would face.

He said that the world would hate them because it first hated him.

“If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.”

His words were not meant to discourage but to prepare them for what was to come.

What can guide us today as we encounter rejection or misunderstanding?

First, following Christ means you cannot please everybody.

Jesus said, “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.”

He made it clear that his followers would not always be accepted.

The values he taught often went against the ways of the world.

Because of this, rejection became part of the journey of discipleship.

The early Christians experienced this in a very real and painful way.

Their faith made them different, and that difference brought hostility.

Yet they did not change their beliefs to fit in.

They remained faithful, even when it cost them everything.

In our lives, rejection may not come in the same extreme forms, but it still exists.

We may be misunderstood, criticized, or excluded because of our values.

When this happens, we are reminded that we are not alone.

Jesus himself walked this path, and he invited us to remain faithful.

Second, following Christ means staying faithful even in difficult times.

Jesus said, “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.”

He did not promise an easy path, but he assured his followers that their struggles were part of sharing in his life.

Faithfulness was not measured by comfort but by perseverance.

The courage of the early Christians came from their deep trust in God.

They faced suffering with hope, believing that their faith was worth more than their lives.

Their witness became a powerful testimony that strengthened others and kept the faith alive.

In our daily experience, difficulties can test our commitment.

It may be easier to compromise or stay silent.

Yet Jesus called us to remain faithful, even when it is not the best of times.

As we reflect, we ask ourselves: Do I stay true to my faith even when others do not understand or accept it?

Do I remain faithful in difficult situations, or do I give in to pressure? Do I see challenges as opportunities to grow stronger in my relationship with Christ?

Children of God:
The story of the early Christians reminds us that faith is not always easy.

Jesus spoke honestly about the challenges his followers would face.

Yet he also showed that these challenges have meaning.

They connect us more deeply with him.

Our witness may not be dramatic as the first Christians under the Roman Empire, but remember, your witness, even in small things, can also inspire others.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
