150 Students Join Traditional Paddy Planting Initiative in Northeast India

Students from different Christian denominations take part in the annual paddy plantation program organized by the Ekhramei Students' Union in Makhan on June 27.

About 150 students from different Christian denominations participated in an annual paddy plantation program organized by the Ekhramei Students' Union (ESU) under St. Xavier's Parish in Makhan, Manipur, in northeast India, on June 27.

Held under the theme, "Preserving Tradition Through Collective Action," the initiative promoted traditional farming practices while encouraging unity, cooperation, and service among young people.

The annual program, rooted in the customs of the Ekhramei community, brought together youth, village leaders, and local residents to work side by side in the paddy fields. Organizers said the activity helps preserve an agricultural tradition that has been passed down through generations while strengthening community bonds.

They emphasized that paddy cultivation is not only a source of livelihood but also an important part of the community's cultural identity. They encouraged the participants to continue preserving these traditions through collective effort and mutual support.

A key feature of the initiative was assisting elderly villagers, people who are sick, widows, and economically disadvantaged families who are unable to cultivate their fields on their own. Volunteers worked together to ensure that these households could complete their planting during the farming season.

Organized during the students' vacation, the program also gave young people an opportunity to reconnect with their cultural roots and gain firsthand experience in agriculture. Organizers said the activity promotes respect for manual labor while fostering values such as teamwork, responsibility, and service.

Preparations began three weeks before the event, with volunteers coordinating logistics and mobilizing participants. Lunch and refreshments were sponsored by the family of the late MLA N. Kayisii.

ESU President Mr. Manikho thanked the participants and community members for their strong support.

"The response from all ESU units and participants was very positive and encouraging. We should continue to celebrate the beautiful traditions and hardworking spirit of our people," he said.

He also expressed hope that the initiative would continue to grow in the coming years with broader community participation.

The annual plantation program remains one of the Ekhramei Students' Union's key community activities, combining traditional farming, volunteer service, and youth engagement to preserve local heritage and strengthen community solidarity
