Balanga diocese bishop-elect Rufino Sescon, Jr. chose to be ordained on the 39th anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. in 1986 after 21 years in power.

Bishop Rufino Sescon, Jr., who was appointed head of the Diocese of Balanga by Pope Francis in December 2024, was ordained during the 39th anniversary of EDSA People Power Revolution on Tuesday.

February 25, 1986, will forever be remembered as one of the most pivotal days in the Philippines. This date marked the end of the dictatorship of then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the restoration of democracy in the country.

In a collective defiance to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s non-declaration of February 25 as a special non-working holiday, as has been traditionally observed, Catholic and non-Catholic schools across the country have suspended classes on the occasion of the 39th EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary tomorrow.

As the nation marks the 39th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution, the Church Leaders Council for National Transformation (CLCNT) calls on all Filipinos to unite in a mass gathering at the People Power Monument on February 25, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., according to a press release from Caritas Philippines.

Church leaders in the Philippines have created a new council to advocate for good governance and national renewal.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan in Northern part of the Philippines has reminded the youth to remember and not forget the history of the EDSA People Power Revolution, nearing its 39th year anniversary.

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines - National Capital Region (CEAP NCR) strongly encourages all member schools to continue commemorating February 25 as the anniversary of the People Power Revolution.
