On 15 October the Church commemorates Teresa of Ávila, the sixteenth-century Spanish Carmelite who was named a Doctor of the Church in 1970 and thus became the first woman to receive that title, along with Catherine of Siena.
Every year on October 15, the Church pauses to remember a woman whose deep love for God transformed the world. St. Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582) remains one of the most remarkable figures in Christian spirituality.
