Pope Leo XIV received Vietnamese Vice-President Vo Thi An Xuan in an audience at the Apostolic Palace on 30 June, the Vatican News reported.

After the audience, Xuan met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

The meeting between Gallagher and Xuan acknowledged the positive developments between the Vatican and this Southeast Asian socialist state.

The meeting particularly touched on the implementation of the Agreement on the Status of the Resident Pontifical Representative in Vietnam and highlighted the Catholic Church’s contribution to Vietnamese society.

The Catholic Church began to take root in Vietnam in the 16th century through missionaries. Catholicism is the second-largest religion after Buddhism.

The Church in Vietnam is significantly involved in education and healthcare ministries, running schools, hospitals, and orphanages. During times of floods and typhoons, the Church has rendered valuable service, dispatching resources and volunteers to deliver food to disaster survivors and help rebuild their lives and communities.

The meeting between Gallagher and Xuan also included discussions on the socio-political situation in Vietnam, as well as regional and international developments.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
