IMCS-PNG Congratulates Pope Leo on His Election as the New Supreme Pontiff

Newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States, appears on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, following his election on May 8, 2025.

The International Movement of Catholic Students in Papua New Guinea (IMCS-PNG), in collaboration with Catholic student communities from across the country, joyfully extends heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo on his election as the new Supreme Pontiff of the Holy Catholic Church.

In a historic and hope-filled moment for the global Church, young Catholic students from universities, colleges, and seminaries across Papua New Guinea have united in thanksgiving and solidarity, expressing profound reverence and support for the newly elected pope.  The students acknowledged this significant event as a symbol of unity, continuity, and spiritual renewal, especially for the youth of the Church.

“We are filled with joy and thanksgiving,” the statement reads, “as we welcome a shepherd who walks humbly with the marginalized and brings a renewed sense of mission, hope, and Christian leadership.”

Recognizing the diversity of Papua New Guinea—home to over 800 languages and cultures—IMCS-PNG affirmed Pope Leo’s inclusive vision of universal fraternity. They expressed gratitude for his call to embrace unity in diversity and to prioritize the voices of the young, the poor, and the forgotten.

The Catholic students highlighted the central role of the Church in education, healthcare, peacebuilding, and justice in Papua New Guinea. “Catholic institutions in PNG are where we learned to think critically, pray deeply, and serve joyfully. We see our mission reaffirmed under your leadership.”

The students were especially moved by Pope Leo’s appeal to young people to become “builders of bridges, not walls.” They pledged to respond to this call by promoting peace and reconciliation in communities fractured by tribal conflict, inequality, and ecological crisis.

IMCS-PNG also emphasized the importance of youth in the Church’s present and future. Citing inspiration from previous pontiffs like Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Francis, the movement committed itself to living out the Gospel with “courage, creativity, and compassion,” especially through programs focused on human rights, environmental stewardship, and interreligious dialogue.

“We are ready to walk with you synodally—as a listening, learning, and accompanying Church,” the statement added. “Your papacy reminds us that the Church has no borders, and the Gospel is for every people, every culture, and every language.”

In a moving tribute, the students invoked the intercession of Mary Help of Christians, patroness of PNG, and Blessed Peter ToRot, the nation’s beloved martyr. They assured Pope Leo of their continuous prayers and support.

“May your ministry be filled with grace, strength, and the gentle power of the Holy Spirit. We, the Catholic students of Papua New Guinea, walk with you in faith, prayer, and love.”

Congratulations, Pope Leo!
