17 students killed in Myanmar school bombing despite ceasefire

At least 17 students were killed in a junta airstrike on a school in Depayin, Myanmar, on May 12, 2025.

At least 17 students were killed and 20 others injured in a junta-led airstrike on a school in Depayin, central Myanmar according to the country’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) on May 12.

The attack occurred in Depayin, Sagaing region, an opposition-held area already reeling from the aftermath of a devastating March 28 earthquake.

NUG spokesperson Nay Phone Latt confirmed the casualties, adding, “Some may be missing due to bomb damage, so the death toll could be higher.”

The targeted school is operated by the NUG, which includes elected officials ousted in the 2021 military coup and allied anti-junta groups.

The incident took place despite a ceasefire declared by the military following the earthquake, which was recently extended to May 31 to facilitate humanitarian aid.

The military has not commented on the airstrike. Though a ceasefire was announced in early April and echoed by several resistance groups, reports of continued air and artillery attacks have surfaced from various conflict-affected regions.

Myanmar has been locked in civil conflict since the February 2021 coup, with the junta facing fierce resistance from ethnic armed groups and NUG-aligned forces.

The Sagaing region remains one of the hotbeds of resistance and has seen intense violence in recent months.
