Cambodia: Pope names Msgr. Pierre Suon Hangly as Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of Phnom Penh

On June 28, 2025, Pope Leo XIV appointed Msgr. Pierre Suon Hangly as the Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The Apostolic Nunciature to Cambodia, based in Bangkok, announced the news, praying for Msgr. Hangly and for those under his pastoral care.
Pope Francis appointed Hangly as the new apostolic prefect of Kompong Cham on July 15, 2022.
He was born on April 14, 1972, in Phnom Penh and was ordained a priest on December 9, 2001.
He served as a parish priest in Kampot/Takeo from 2002 to 2007, followed by studies in France at the Institut Catholique de Paris (2007–2015) to secure a bachelor’s degree and a licentiate in theology.
Upon his return to Cambodia, he became vicar general of the Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penh and superior at the local seminary. On October 1, 2022, Kompong Cham installed him as the apostolic prefect.
The Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penh covers the southern part of the country, including Phnom Penh and other major urban areas.
Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler, a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP), is the head of the Apostolic Vicariate of Phnom Penh, which includes 7 pastoral centers and 26 priests and serves a Catholic population within a larger population of 6.4 million.
Msgr. Hangly will work closely with Bishop Schmitthaeusler as the Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of Phnom Penh.
