Cardinal Koovakad Concludes Bangladesh Visit with a Call for Interfaith Dialogue and Harmony

Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, concluded his official visit to Bangladesh with a heartfelt appeal for mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration among religious communities.
Speaking at a press conference held at Archbishop Bhaban Hall in Kakrail, Dhaka, on September 10, Cardinal Koovakad expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by people of all faiths, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists.
“Prejudice is the enemy of dialogue,” he said. “I saw a genuine eagerness for interreligious dialogue here. There is great potential to work together. Today I visited the Islamic Foundation and learned about their efforts to educate and inspire young people. The Catholic Church shares this mission, to build a prosperous and peaceful society.”
Cardinal Koovakad emphasized that interfaith collaboration is especially vital during times of crisis. “When tensions arise, Christians and Muslims can come together to calm society and seek non-violent solutions. We must speak up and support one another in promoting peace.”

Reflecting on the nature of his visit, Cardinal Koovakad clarified, “This was not a political mission; it was a friendly visit. We came to listen, to learn, and to work together. It is a mutual exchange of ideas and goodwill.”
Archbishop Bejoy N. D’Cruze, OMI, of Dhaka, echoed the Cardinal’s sentiments, stressing the importance of openness in interfaith dialogue. “We must approach dialogue with open hearts,” he said. D’Cruze, who is also President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh, added, “Every religion holds beauty and wisdom. Instead of criticizing, we should seek and appreciate the good in others. Dialogue should lead to friendship, love, and patience, only then can we reach the truth.”
The press conference was moderated by Fr. Bulbul Rebeiro, Convener of the Media Committee for the Cardinal’s visit.
During his stay from September 6–11, Cardinal Koovakad met with the Honorable Chief Justice and participated in several seminars and conferences with national and local religious leaders. His engagements focused on strengthening cooperation and fostering mutual understanding among diverse faith traditions.
Cardinal Koovakad’s visit marks a significant step forward in promoting interreligious dialogue in Bangladesh, reinforcing the shared commitment to peace, unity, and human dignity.
