Caritas Philippines to boost anti-poverty programs with government partnership

Caritas Philippines, a social development wing of Catholic bishops in the country, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for strengthening its anti-poverty and empowerment programs for marginalized communities.

In a press release, Caritas Philippines said this decision serves as the reaffirmation of their commitment to national transformation through collaborative action.

“This partnership with DSWD is Caritas Philippines’ way of accessing programs and resources of the government that are intended for the marginalized sectors of our society, regardless of their faith community,” said Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, president of Caritas Philippines.

“We hope this will expand the reach and facilitate the quick delivery of services. The character and civic formation component of the programs makes them more than just a dole out or ayuda (aid) support,” he also said.

Caritas Philippines also described the partnership as their effort to “address poverty at its roots” in the most inclusive, sustainable, and people-centered way.

Meanwhile, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian recognized the importance of making the strengths and resources of the private and religious sectors easily accessible in creating anti-poverty initiatives.

“With the help of Caritas Philippines, we will be able to ensure a holistic intervention—partnering with them in values formation, financial literacy sessions, skills development, and character building for our clients and beneficiaries,” said Gatchalian.
