China: Auxiliary Bishop Jianlin Wu Ordained in the Diocese of Shanghai

The episcopal ordination of Auxiliary Bishop Jianlin Wu of the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai was celebrated on October 15, 2025, at St. Ignatius Cathedral in Xujiahui, Shanghai.
According to Faith Press, the solemn liturgy was presided over by Bishop Shen Bin, Chairman of the Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC) and Vice Chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA). He was joined by Bishop Yang Yongqiang of Hangzhou and Bishop Li Suguang of Jiangxi, both Vice Chairmen of the BCCCC, as well as Bishop Xu Honggen of Suzhou, who served as co-consecrators.
Fr. Yang Yu, Secretary-General of the Bishops’ Conference, read the official approval document from the BCCCC confirming Bishop Wu’s appointment. Nearly 600 faithful, including priests, seminarians, religious sisters, and lay representatives from across the Diocese of Shanghai, attended the ordination ceremony.
Auxiliary Bishop Jianlin Wu, whose baptismal name is Ignatius, was born in January 1970 in Chongming District, Shanghai. He studied theology at Sheshan Seminary from 1991 to 1996 and was ordained a priest in November 1997.
Over the years, Bishop Wu has served the local Church in various leadership roles, including Deputy Director of the Shanghai Catholic Patriotic Association (since 2003), Director of the Shanghai Catholic Affairs Committee, and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Catholic Patriotic Association (since 2016). In August 2022, he was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China and became a Standing Committee Member of the CCPA.
He was elected Auxiliary Bishop-designate of Shanghai on April 28, 2025, and now takes on his episcopal ministry to assist in the pastoral and administrative needs of one of China’s most vibrant dioceses.
