Grandparents: The Evergreen Gift of Our Families

GrandParents.

Grandparents are truly an evergreen gift a blessing whose value only grows with time. These remarkable individuals, once the guiding hands of our own parents, now offer their wisdom, warmth, and quiet strength to the next generation.

The Unspoken Warmth They Offer

In today’s fast-paced world, particularly in India where both parents often work long hours, children are left longing for more presence, more affection. This is where grandparents step in not as stand-ins, but as anchors of love and stability.

They provide care that goes beyond duty: a reassuring presence, a gentle hand, a watchful eye. Their presence is like a warm blanket on a cold day, offering both comfort and security. Whether it’s telling stories, helping with homework, or simply being there, grandparents become an integral part of a child’s emotional and spiritual development.

When families migrate abroad in search of better opportunities, children often end up in daycares or crèches, missing out on the warmth and guidance that only a grandparent can provide. Here in Goa and across many Indian villages and towns grandparents continue to fill this vital role, not merely supervising but nurturing and forming their grandchildren with love and values.

Quiet Strength, Lasting Influence

I recall a story from a family I know. During a holiday gathering, the siblings and cousins were reminiscing when one remarked, “At least because of her, we come home on time.” Their grandmother hadn’t laid down rules or reprimanded anyone her very presence had instilled a quiet discipline.

That’s the beauty of grandparents: they shape us through their example more than their words. Their influence is powerful, yet gentle.

Grandparents are also our living memory. They are the keepers of our family stories, traditions, and cultural roots. Through their recollections, they teach us not just about the past but about values like patience, humility, and unconditional love lessons no textbook can ever teach.

When They Are Forgotten

Yet, amid all their contributions, a painful reality persists. In some families, grandparents face neglect even abandonment. Some are left alone, disowned, and displaced. In heartbreaking cases, their humble homes their komptis are taken away to make room for rented buildings.

It is unthinkable: how can we forget the hands that once held us, the hearts that loved us without question?

Let’s Honour Them – Not Just Today

As the Church celebrates the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne on July 26 the grandparents of Mother Mary let us do more than just remember them. Let us truly honour the gift that grandparents are.

They are the roots of our family tree, the compass that helps us navigate life, the silent guardians of our heritage. On this Grandparents’ Day, let’s not stop at appreciation let’s act: visit them, call them, listen to their stories, and express our love while we still can.

Their contribution goes far beyond childcare. They are the anchors of our families, the stewards of our faith and culture, and the gentle hands shaping our future. Their presence is a treasure evergreen, irreplaceable, and profoundly sacred.
