India: Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore holds leadership Training for YCS/YSM students

The Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu organized a Leadership Training Programme for members of the Young Christian Students/Young Students’ Movement (YCS/YSM) on October 18, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Anglo-Indian Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Chennai,
The formation event opened with a prayer and welcome address, followed by the introduction of Fr. Varun Richard, Assistant Parish Priest of St. Susaiyappar Church, Vepery and a former YCS/YSM member. Students were then divided into groups along with their animators, while youth leaders and volunteers ensured the smooth conduct of the sessions.
Fr. Varun Richard led the first session, reflecting on the themes “What is Leadership?”, “Who is a True Leader?”, and “Qualities of a True Leader.” A creative street play on leadership performed by students added an engaging dimension to the day’s learning.
The second session focused on “Leadership in the YCS/YSM Process and Practice.” Fr. Varun encouraged participants to recognize the challenges of leadership and reminded them that “small actions can bring about great change.”
Inspiring testimonies were later shared by Mrs. Princess Beulah, former animator, and Ms. Monette Reni, National Secretary of YCS/YSM, who spoke about their own leadership journeys and experiences in the movement.
The event was coordinated by Br. Deepak, with the support of Fr. Varun Richard, youth volunteers, and animators Mrs. Benisha and Mrs. Grace Paul. A total of 21 schools participated, representing 185 students and 29 animators.
The day concluded with a vote of thanks and the felicitation of guests, expressing appreciation to Fr. Peter Gerald, Correspondent of St. Joseph’s Anglo-Indian Boys’ Higher Secondary School, and to all principals, correspondents, and animators for their cooperation.
The program ended with the signature YCS/YSM applause, capturing the spirit of joy, faith, and commitment that marked the day, inspiring every participant to embrace leadership as a call to service.
