India: Thomas Communication Centre Launches Golden Jubilee Year

On the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, the St. Thomas Communication Centre, the Social Communications Commission of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council, officially launched its Golden Jubilee Year.
It is located in Chennai, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Founded on August 6, 1976, under the leadership of 13 diocesan bishops with Fr. Victor Sundarraj as its first director, the Centre has spent the last five decades proclaiming God’s love through the media.
The celebration was led by Commission Chairman Archbishop George Antonysamy, with blessings from former chairman Bishop Singaroyan. The occasion was graced by former directors, Fr. Victor Sundarraj, Fr. Kirubakaran, Fr. Joe Lourdesamy, and Fr. Benedict, as well as former assistant directors, religious sisters, staff, and theatre artists. Heartfelt testimonies from the former directors, recalling the Centre’s early struggles, sacrifices, and achievements, moved many to tears.
Speakers highlighted significant milestones: Christian radio productions for Radio Veritas Asia and Vatican Radio; the production of audio cassettes and CDs; television broadcasts; and short films. A long-cherished dream came true with the launch of Madha TV on February 11, 2014. In recent years, the Centre has expanded its mission through St. Thomas Academy (media training), St. Thomas Studios (audio production), SYNC (youth creative formation), and the New Wave social media platform.
Launching the Jubilee Year, Archbishop Antonysamy urged unity in the Gospel mission: “Let us join hands and build God’s Kingdom through the media.”
Fr. David Arokiasamy, the current director, noted that the St. Thomas Communication Centre rejoices greatly in completing 49 years and eagerly anticipates entering its 50th. He congratulated all involved, urging them to recognize the guiding hand of God in the Centre’s journey, and expressed gratitude to Our Blessed Mother Mary and to the patron, St. Thomas the Apostle. With a spirit of thanksgiving towards all who have contributed generously to its growth, the Golden Jubilee Year was joyfully inaugurated.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
