On March 30, 2026, three priests, Fr. Walter De Sa, Fr. Antonio Salema, and Fr. Leonardo de Souza, were conferred the title of canon of the Cathedral Chapter of Goa, bringing the total number of canons to 12 in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman in southwest India, Catholic Connect reported.

The solemn liturgy took place at the historic Sé Cathedral and was presided over by Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão.

Cardinal Ferrão's homily, as reported by Catholic Connect,  reflected on three essential dimensions of love foundational to Christian life and ministry, drawing inspiration from the Gospel account of Mary of Bethany (John 12:1–12).

First, he highlighted the generosity of love. Mary’s anointing of the Lord with costly perfume, he said, reveals a love that gives without reserve. Such generosity, he noted, must characterize all pastoral ministry, a self-offering that seeks not to measure but to give entirely for Christ and His Church.

Second, he spoke of the humility of love. In wiping the feet of Jesus with her hair, Mary embodies a love that expresses itself in service. This, the Cardinal explained, reflects the deeper theological reality of kenosis, a self-emptying that lies at the heart of divine love.

Third, he emphasized the unselfishness of love. Mary’s gesture, he said, was a pure gift, free from any desire for recognition, calling the faithful to a sincerity of love that seeks only the glory of God.

According to Catholic Connect, during the rite, Canon Rosario Oliveira, secretary of the Chapter, read the official letters of appointment. The liturgical celebration was enriched by the Sé Cathedral Choir, while Fr. Onasis D’Cruz served as commentator. Speaking on behalf of the newly installed canons, Canon Leonardo de Souza expressed heartfelt gratitude. Canon Alfred Vaz, president of the Cathedral Chapter, delivered the vote of thanks.

In a rapidly changing world, the Cathedral Chapter remains a quiet yet powerful witness to continuity, reverence, and faithful service, reminding the Church that enduring meaning is found in serving what is entrusted with love and dedication.
