Indonesian Catholics Mark 60 Years of Surakarta Region with Javanese Cultural Celebration
Thousands of Catholics gathered at Mangkunegaran Palace in Surakarta, Central Java, on October 7 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Surakarta Catholic Region with a Eucharistic celebration blending Catholic worship and Javanese cultural traditions.
Archbishop Robertus Rubiyatmoko of Semarang presided over the thanksgiving Mass at the palace’s Great Pavilion, joined by Fr. Herman Yoseph Singgih Sutoro, episcopal vicar of Surakarta, and dozens of priests.
The celebration featured traditional music, cultural performances and Javanese attire, reflecting the Church’s efforts to remain rooted in local culture while serving the wider community.
The anniversary theme, “Nyawiji, Mawutuh, Andum Berkah,” uses three Javanese expressions to convey unity, fraternity and sharing blessings. It calls Catholics to strengthen their bonds with one another, build a united community and contribute to the well-being of society.
Fr. Sutoro said the celebration aimed to encourage Catholics to engage with Javanese traditions and become a blessing to the wider community.
The choice of Mangkunegaran Palace carried historical significance. On December 24, 1957, the same pavilion hosted a Christmas Eve Mass presided over by Bishop Albertus Soegijapranata, then apostolic vicar of Semarang, with permission from Mangkunegara VIII, the palace’s ruler at the time.
The anniversary gathering renewed this historical connection between the Catholic Church and Javanese cultural heritage. Members of the Mangkunegaran royal family attended the celebration, underscoring the relationship between the palace and the local Catholic community.
The event also highlighted the Javanese expression “Agama ageming aji,” which presents religion as a precious garment that should be reflected in a person’s conduct and treatment of others. The idea reinforces the anniversary’s call for Catholics to translate faith into service and responsible participation in society.
Established on October 7, 1966, the Surakarta Catholic Region is part of the Archdiocese of Semarang. Its pastoral territory includes Surakarta city and six surrounding regencies: Boyolali, Karanganyar, Klaten, Sragen, Sukoharjo and Wonogiri.
The region comprises 29 parishes and one station, serving approximately 92,000 Catholics, according to data cited by the anniversary organizers.
The Church’s presence extends beyond parish life through educational institutions, health care, social services, formation centers and pilgrimage sites. Catholic educational foundations, including Pangudi Luhur, Marsudirini, Tarakanita and Kanisius, operate schools in the region.
The October 7 celebration concluded several months of anniversary activities involving parishes and communities across the region. These included Eucharistic celebrations, social initiatives, educational programs and cultural performances, including Javanese poetry and a theatrical concert titled Kawula Satuhu.
The gathering invited Catholics to look beyond six decades of institutional growth and consider how their faith can contribute to social harmony.
Through the anniversary theme, the Surakarta Catholic Region emphasized a continuing commitment to unity, fraternity and service, expressing the Church’s mission as one that grows alongside local communities and respects their cultural identity.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
