Last Dutch Franciscan Missionary in Papua, Fr. Nico Syukur Dister, Dies at 87

Fr. Nico Syukur Dister, OFM.

The Franciscan community in Indonesia is mourning the death of Fr. Nico Syukur Dister, OFM, a Dutch missionary priest, philosopher, and longtime educator in Papua. He passed away on April 12, 2026, in his homeland, the Netherlands at the age of 87.

Fr. Dister, regarded as the last Dutch Franciscan missionary serving in Papua, devoted more than four decades to academic and pastoral ministry in Indonesia, particularly in Papua.

Born in Maastricht in 1939, he joined the Order of Friars Minor (OFM) and pursued studies in philosophy and theology in Europe, including at the KU Leuven, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1972. His academic work focused on metaphysics and the philosophy of religion, alongside studies in psychology.

He arrived in Indonesia in 1973 and began teaching at STF Driyarkara in Jakarta, an institution jointly run by the Archdiocese of Jakarta, the Jesuits, and the Franciscans. There, he taught fundamental theology, metaphysics, and the psychology of religion. He also served at the Catechetical Institute “Karya Wacana,” contributing to theological formation.

In 1983, he was assigned to Jayapura, the capital city of Papua Province, where he joined the faculty of STFT Fajar Timur in Abepura. STFT Fajar Timur is one of the main centers of Catholic theological formation in Papua. For more than 40 years, he formed generations of priests, religious, and lay leaders, becoming a respected figure in theological education in Papua.

Fr. Dister formally concluded his mission in April 2024, returning to the Netherlands after 41 years of service in Indonesia.

A farewell Mass held on April 18, 2024, in Jayapura was presided over by Bishop Yanuarius Theofilus Matopai You of the Diocese of Jayapura, with clergy, religious, and faithful in attendance. In his homily, Franciscan leaders compared Fr. Dister’s mission to that of the early Christian evangelizers, highlighting his role as a teacher and guide in the local Church.

Church leaders credited him with shaping many prominent figures, including Bishop You himself, one of Papua’s first indigenous bishops. They also noted his contribution to the growth of the Franciscan mission and his involvement in founding local initiatives such as Yayasan Putri Kerahiman.

Beyond teaching, Fr. Dister was a prolific writer whose works enriched theological and philosophical discourse in Indonesia. His publications addressed themes such as religious experience, freedom, Christology, and the understanding of God in human life.

Remembered for his intellectual depth and humble Franciscan spirit, Fr. Dister encouraged others to cultivate a positive outlook rooted in faith and respect for others.

His passing marks the end of an era of Dutch Franciscan missionary presence in Papua. His legacy, however, lives on through the generations he formed and the enduring impact of his scholarship and ministry in the Indonesian Church, especially in Papua.
