Philippine Carmelites Elect New Provincial Leadership
The Philippine Province of St. Titus Brandsma of the Order of Carmelites (O. Carm.) elected new provincial leadership during its 5th Provincial Chapter held from February 23–27, 2026, at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in Paco, Manila, Philippines.
Sixty-four professed members participated in the Chapter, including Carmelites serving in the Philippines and missionaries assigned to Papua New Guinea, Canada, and the Netherlands. They attended as gremiales, members of the Order entitled to vote and take part in the Chapter proceedings. Lay associates and representatives of the Dutch Province were present as guests.
The Chapter was held under the theme, “Vessels of Hope: Listening Hearts and Serving Hands as Contemplatives in the World.” It was attended by Fr. Desiderio García Martínez, O. Carm., Prior General of the Order, and Fr. Robert Thomas Puthussery, O. Carm., Councilor for Asia–Australia–Oceania.
In his address, the Prior General outlined key challenges facing the Order, including the renewal of consecrated life and fidelity to the Carmelite charism. He emphasized that renewal begins with rediscovering the joy of following Christ through the evangelical counsels, particularly evangelical poverty lived with integrity. He reaffirmed contemplation, prayer, silence, and community life as central to Carmelite identity, while also addressing formation, vocations, missions, safeguarding, and strengthening the Carmelite Family.
Prior to the elections, he reminded members that authority in religious life is rooted in service, unity, and humility, encouraging future leaders to serve their communities with dedication.
