Philippines: Holy Week Musical ‘Deus Meus Quare?’ to Retell Christ’s Passion in Mindoro
A contemporary musical retelling of the Passion of Christ will take center stage during Holy Week 2026 in the Philippine province of Oriental Mindoro, as local artists present an original production titled “Deus Meus Quare?” (My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?).
The performances will take place in Calapan City and Puerto Galera, bringing together more than 100 volunteer performers from different communities across the province.
In the Philippines, religious stage plays are traditionally performed during Holy Week to dramatize the suffering, crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ. Rooted in centuries-old Catholic devotion, these community productions are widely staged across the country to help people reflect on the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice.
The Mindoro production introduces a contemporary musical interpretation of this tradition, combining drama, music, and choreography.
Inspired by Jesus’ cry on the cross
The musical carries the theme “Melody of Salvation, Song of Redemption,” and draws inspiration from one of the Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross: “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).
According to the organizers, this biblical line serves as the spiritual focus of the production, inviting audiences to reflect on human suffering, faith, and hope.
The musical was written and composed by volunteer artists and is presented through a collaboration of local groups, including the Oriental Mindoro Butterfly Society Incorporated (OMBSI), Pasyon de Kristo Creatives (PdKC), and the Volunteer Artists of Mindoro Oriental Society (VAMOS).
A creative retelling of Christ’s life
Unlike traditional Passion plays that begin with the events leading directly to Jesus’ Passion, this production opens with a dramatic scene depicting Jesus as a five-year-old child, inspired by biblical prophecies about the coming Messiah.
From this imaginative beginning, the narrative unfolds through key moments in Jesus’ life and ministry, leading to His crucifixion and resurrection.
The production also incorporates the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, symbolizing Mary’s quiet presence in the suffering of her Son.
Through original music and modern stage design, the show seeks to connect the Gospel narrative with the struggles and questions faced by people today.
A reflection on faith
For director Chavit Zulueta and the volunteer artists behind the project, the production is intended to encourage reflection on faith, particularly during difficult times.
“This is not just a performance,” Zulueta said. “It is a journey of faith. We want people to see their own questions and struggles reflected in Christ’s suffering, and to rediscover hope in His resurrection.”
At the heart of the musical is a challenge posed to the audience: “Until when will you wager everything for your faith?”
Organizers say the question invites viewers to reflect on their trust in God amid personal trials and uncertainty.

The musical will be staged in two locations in Oriental Mindoro:

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
