Philippines: Vincentian Foundation Shelters 700 People Displaced by Torrential Rains

A Catholic charity organization is currently sheltering more than 700 individuals displaced by torrential rains and flooding in the Philippines.

The Vincentian Foundation has opened its doors to flood victims from Bagong Silangan village, Quezon City, following severe monsoon rains intensified by Tropical Depression Dante, which triggered widespread displacement across the area.

Since the evening of July 21, the Foundation’s Bamboo Housing Community has served as a temporary shelter. Initially, it accommodated 650 evacuees from 174 families, but by mid-morning on July 22, that number had grown to around 700 people from 200 families. They are currently being housed in the community’s covered court and multi-purpose hall.

Support for the evacuees has come from various sectors. The local government and village council officials provided floor mats to help families sleep more comfortably. Additional food supplies and relief goods have come from the private sector and business community. A significant contribution was also made by the Tanging Yaman Foundation, facilitated by Jesuit Fr. Manoling Francisco and Fr. Bong Sarabia, CM, who provided groceries, vegetables, used clothing, and other essential items donated by individuals.

With Tropical Depression Dante expected to continue enhancing the southwest monsoon, extreme weather conditions are likely to persist. Though not forecast to make landfall, the storm is causing intense to torrential rainfall, floods, and landslides across Metro Manila and surrounding regions, according to PAGASA, the national weather bureau. These conditions are expected to last through at least July 24.

While the Vincentian Foundation has been able to provide immediate relief, many urgent needs remain. Daily meals lunch and dinner for 700 people are still lacking, along with essential supplies like rice, canned goods, toiletries, and baby and adult diapers.

In-kind donations can be delivered to St. Vincent Seminary along Tandang Sora Avenue, Quezon City. The foundation also welcomes financial support through its official donation platforms and encourages donors to coordinate with the team to ensure proper acknowledgment.

As the crisis continues, the Vincentian Foundation remains committed to its mission of compassionate service and solidarity, standing with the poor and vulnerable during emergencies.
