Pope Encourages Syro-Malankara Faithful in Europe to be Messengers of Hope

Pope Leo XIV underlined the importance of preserving the liturgical and spiritual heritage of the Eastern Catholic Churches.

Pope Leo has encouraged clergy, religious, and lay faithful of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in Europe to become “messengers of hope,” as the Church continues its journey of spiritual renewal ahead of its centenary, according to Vatican News.

The Pope met a delegation attending the first convention of Syro-Malankara faithful residing in Europe at the Vatican on Jun 15.

According to Vatican News, the Holy Father recalled that the Syro-Malankara Church is preparing for a multi-year path of renewal leading to the centenary of its full communion with the Catholic Church, a milestone that shaped its present ecclesial identity.

He expressed gratitude for the witness of Mar Ivanios and Mar Theophilos, recalling the 1932 Apostolic Constitution Christo Pastorum Principi of Pope Pius XI, which marked an important moment in the Church’s journey toward communion with the See of Peter.

Describing Mar Ivanios as a “true shepherd after the heart of Jesus,” the Pope said he embodied the vision of a united Church called to be a sign of communion and reconciliation in the world.

The Pope noted that Mar Ivanios, even as a young priest, looked beyond the boundaries of his community and sought to revive the missionary spirit rooted in the preaching of St. Thomas the Apostle in India.

The Syro-Malankara Church, he said, has become “a beacon of evangelical energy and apostolic charity,” particularly through its commitment to education, social justice, and human development among the marginalised.

Quoting Pope Benedict XVI, the Holy Father reiterated that the Gospel spreads above all through attraction, as Christ draws people to himself through the power of his love.

Turning to the growing diaspora, the Pope underlined the importance of preserving the liturgical and spiritual heritage of the Eastern Catholic Churches. He referred to the establishment of the Apostolic Exarchate for Syro-Malankara faithful in the United States under Pope Benedict XVI, and its later pastoral extension to Canada under Pope Francis.

He also noted the appointment of Mar Osthathios as Apostolic Visitator for Syro-Malankara Catholics in Europe, tasked with strengthening pastoral care and laying “firm and enduring foundations” for future generations.

The Pope said he has asked the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches to support dialogue on how Latin bishops can assist Eastern Catholic communities in preserving their traditions while enriching local Churches.

Concluding his address, the Pope encouraged the faithful to deepen awareness of their “precious identity,” remain united with their Major Archbishop and Synod of Bishops, and actively participate in the life of the Church.

He also highlighted the Syro-Malankara tradition of strong family life rooted in the witness of St. Thomas Christians, praying that “strong faith may continue to thrive” in families, especially among young people, according to Vatican News.
