Shehan Fernando will soon become the first-ever Divine Word Missionary from Sri Lanka to Australia.

Before joining Divine Word Missionaries, he was a history teacher in his home country. He published two books on Sri Lankan and world history.

At the end of 2013, Fernando felt God was calling him for a greater purpose.

He went to Australia in 2014 to find out what it was. After spending six years with another order, he joined Divine Word Missionaries in January 2020.

Having already completed his bachelor's degrees in theology and ministry, he continued with post-graduate studies and completed his theological studies in 2020.

He continues to do research in systematic theology while being a novice at Dorish Maru College in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill.

According to the source, Fernando will profess his first vows as a Divine Word Missionary on February 27. After this, he will spend a year of pastoral experience in the Divine Word parish located in Alice Springs.

Saint Arnold Janssen, a German-Dutch Catholic priest, founded the Society of the Divine Word, a Catholic missionary religious congregation, also known as the Divine Word Missionaries, on September 8, 1875.

As of 2020, the congregation had 6,023 priests and religious brothers working in more than 70 countries, including Australia.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
