It is in trying times that people look up to heaven and raise their prayers and pleas. God responds in His own time, preparing His chosen instruments. In the Bible, these individuals are called leaders, freedom fighters, patriarchs, judges, kings, prophets, and more. Among them, Moses holds a unique place. He is born during a dangerous time, when Pharaoh has commanded the midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill all Hebrew newborn boys.

Inspired by God, Moses’ mother hides him for three months. As the danger grows, she and his sister devise a plan to draw the attention of Pharaoh’s childless daughter during her visit to bathe in the Nile. They place the baby in a specially prepared basket among the reeds. Though unnamed at this point, God’s hand is already upon him. The princess discovers the child, names him Moses, and raises him in Pharaoh’s palace ironically preparing the one who will later bring down Egypt’s power through the might of Yahweh.

Just as God intervened in Israel’s suffering through Moses, He intervenes in humanity’s pain through His Son, Jesus. Jesus went about teaching, preaching, healing, and offering deep inner renewal. Yet many remained spectators, drawn more by the food He offered than by His message. Some were indifferent, undecided and passive. Others actively opposed Him.

The cities of Chorazin and Bethsaida, despite witnessing His miracles, failed to repent unlike the pagan cities of Tyre and Sidon, known for their past repentance in sackcloth and ashes. Jesus expresses sorrow over these unrepentant hearts. His powerful deeds should have led them to conversion.

Openness to God’s plan and cooperation with His design bring transformation and blessings for individuals and communities alike.

Call to Action:  God works in His own way. It is difficult to realize this if we do not seek Him in prayer and contemplation. How much time do we set apart each day?
