Do not be afraid

August 6. Saturday  the 18th; Transfiguration of the Lord
Daily readings: Daniel 7: 9-10, 13-14; Peter 1: 16-19; Gospel, Luke 9: 28b-36

The Word and Presence of Jesus enable us to overcome fear in life. The presence of Jesus is a sign that God is always with us.

Today, we celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The Gospel reading shows that Jesus invited the three chosen apostles: Peter, James, and John, to climb a high mountain. They saw Jesus transfigured before them in shining white clothes.

Peter's expression was one of joy. He intended to instantly build three tents for Moses, Elijah, and Jesus Christ out of his immediate desire to spend longer with Jesus. It was proof that Jesus was the Messiah who had been foretold. The disciples of Jesus were thus joyful as a result of this vision.

The joy turned to fear when a bright cloud suddenly overshadowed them, and from within the cloud, a voice said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Hearing the vote, the disciples fell silent, terrified. The fear disappeared when Jesus said to them, "Don’t be afraid."

In life, we frequently experience dread that prevents us from daring to look into God's face. The words of God cause us to bow to God; we fall and are afraid to resist. Despite how far away God is, God's word and presence finally give us the courage to face life.

In celebrating the feast of the transfiguration of the Lord, God wants those who listen to His words also to enjoy His glory. God wants us to listen to His son by following Him, hearing and applying His words in our daily lives. By hearing Jesus, we listen to the Father himself because Jesus and the Father are one.
