Finding Balance in a Busy World
Reflection Date: May 19, 2026 | Tuesday of the Seventh Week of Easter
Daily Readings: Acts 16:22-34; John 17:1-11
Children of God:
After the first 300 years of Christianity, which was the era of Christian persecution, what follows was the Monastic Era.
Because there was no more persecution and the faith was allowed public practice, this era saw the proliferation of monasteries.
Many went into deserts and remote places, desiring silence, prayer, and discipline.
Over time, these individuals formed communities that lived together under shared rules and spiritual practices.
One of the most influential figures in this movement was Saint Benedict of Nursia.
He saw the need for a balanced and stable way of life after witnessing disorder and lack of discipline among some monks.
To address this, he wrote a rule that guided daily living with structure and purpose.
His famous principle, “Ora et Labora,” meaning “pray and work,” became the foundation of Benedictine life.
It emphasized that prayer and daily tasks were not separate but equally important.
This rhythm created harmony, preventing both idleness and burnout.
Monasteries became centers of learning, prayer, and service throughout history.
The Benedictine way showed that a balanced life leads to deeper faith and lasting impact.
In the gospel of John, Jesus lifted his eyes to heaven and prayed for his disciples.
He spoke of glorifying the Father through the mission he received and asked for unity among those who followed him.
What can guide us today as we seek balance and purpose?
First, a meaningful life grows from a deep relationship with God.
Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life, that they should know you.”
Knowing God was at the center of everything that Jesus did.
His mission flowed from this connection.
Therefore, prayer was not an optional activity but the foundation of daily life.
Everything else flowed from it.
In our lives, we often become busy with many responsibilities.
It is easy to focus on tasks and forget the source of our strength.
Jesus invited us to prioritize our relationship with God.
When we stay connected to him, our work gains meaning and direction.
A meaningful life grows from a deep relationship with God.
Second, a meaningful life is lived in faithful responsibility.
Jesus said, “I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.”
He showed that honoring God involved completing the mission entrusted to him.
His life was not only about prayer but also about action.
In our daily experience, we are also given responsibilities.
Whether in family, work, or community, these tasks are part of our calling.
When we approach them with faithfulness, they become ways of glorifying God.
Balance comes when we unite prayer and action.
A meaningful life is lived in faithful responsibility.
As we reflect, we ask ourselves: Do I prioritize my relationship with God in the midst of my busy life?
Do I see my daily responsibilities as part of my mission? Do I strive for balance between prayer and action in my life?
Children of God:
Life is meant to be lived with balance and purpose.
Prayer gives meaning to our work, and work expresses our prayer.
We are invited to live this harmony in our daily lives.
When we take time to pray, we find clarity.
When we work with purpose, we find fulfillment.
