Malaysia: Hundreds Gather for the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima in Kuala Lumpur

Holding candles and Rosaries, the faithful prayed together as they accompanied the decorated palanquin carrying the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

Hundreds of parishioners and pilgrims gathered at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on May 13 to celebrate the parish feast day with prayer, a Feast Mass, and a candlelight procession through the city streets.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim of Kuala Lumpur, concelebrated by Fr. Michael Adawai, Fr. Michel Dass, Fr. Simon Agbo, and Fr. Andrew Manickam.

In his homily, Archbishop Julian highlighted the importance of listening to and living out the Word of God. Reflecting on Luke 11:27-28, where a woman in the crowd praises the mother of Jesus, the archbishop said that while family ties and respect for elders remain important, believers are called to a deeper discipleship rooted in obedience to God’s word.

“Blessed rather are those who hear the Word of God and keep it,” he said, quoting the Gospel passage.

Speaking on the theme “Mary, Model of Evangelisation,” Archbishop Julian described Mary as the perfect example of a disciple who listened, reflected, and acted faithfully in response to God’s call.

He said that, like Mary during the Annunciation, Christians are called to listen attentively to God’s word and ponder it in their hearts. Just as Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, the faithful are also called to reach out to others through charity, service, and ministry.

The archbishop also pointed to Mary’s Magnificat as a model for giving glory to God and bearing witness to the faith. He recalled her steadfast presence at the foot of the Cross and her accompaniment of the apostles at Pentecost as signs of her enduring faithfulness and discipleship.

The Archbishop’s homily was followed by a Tamil reflection on the same theme.

Following the Mass, Archbishop Julian and the clergy led the faithful in a candlelight Rosary procession through the streets of Brickfields, a neighbourhood long associated with Kuala Lumpur’s Catholic and multicultural heritage.

Holding candles and Rosaries, the faithful prayed together as they accompanied the decorated palanquin carrying the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Different parishioners took turns carrying the palanquin during the procession.

The celebration concluded with a fellowship dinner attended by parishioners, pilgrims, and visitors.

The annual feast of Our Lady of Fatima remains one of the major Marian celebrations for Catholics in the parish, drawing the faithful together in prayer, devotion, and public witness of faith.
