Loving God and people ensures eternal life

July 10, Sunday, 15th Week in Ordinary Time
Sunday readings: Deuteronomy 30:10-14; Colossians 1:15-20; Gospel: Luke 10:25-37

Loving God and others with our hearts and minds guarantees endless life opportunities in Heaven.

In today's first reading, we learned about the location of God's mandate, and in today's Gospel, we learned how to obey it.

The doctors did not get their degrees quickly. They did not have the license to cure because they did not have the medical knowledge to work at home. They must attend medical universities in their home and foreign countries to get this knowledge.

The first reading tells us that the commandment is near you, in your heart, and at the tips of your lips, and you only need to carry it out. "No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and hearts; you have only to carry it out."

The gospel tells us how we can possess eternal life. That is to love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, with all our strength, and with all our minds. The second one is to love our neighbors. Jesus taught us in the parable about our neighbors.

There is nobody who does not love themselves. We eat when we are hungry. We sleep when we are sleepy. We use aircon or fans when we feel hot. We protect ourselves from getting sick. When we get sick, we go to the clinic.

With the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught us to know our neighbors. The priest and Levite did not help the traveler. Only the Good Samaritan helped with this.

Like the good Samaritan, Jesus also looks after his flock. The Samaritans cured the wounds by pouring wine and oil, so Jesus anointed our wounds with evil by calling the holy oil.

In the church, Jesus feeds us with bread and wine and keeps us in a safe place; that is the church. Like the Samaritan gave the fee of two silver coins, Jesus gave the scripture and sacraments and kept us in the church.

The Samaritan said, "If it is not enough, I will give it to you when I come back." Likewise, Jesus promised his second coming.

Let us keep in mind that taking care of our neighbors is taking care of Jesus. And the commandment that can lead us to heaven is near us, in our hearts, and at the tip of our lips by taking care of our marginalized neighbors.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
