Pope Francis requested a “special prayer” for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI at the end of the General Audience on Wednesday.

“I would like to ask you all for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict, who in silence, is supporting the Church. Remember him - he is very ill - asking the Lord to console him and sustain him in this witness of love for the Church until the end,” Pope Francis said.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is 95 years old.

The director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, affirmed that Pope Benedict’s health condition had worsened but asserted that the situation remained stable.

Bruni told the journalists, "In the last few hours, there has been an aggravation of his health due to advancing age.”

He continued that the situation “at the moment remains under control” and that doctors constantly monitored Pope Emeritus.

Bruni said that after the General Audience, Pope Francis went to the Mater Ecclesiae monastery where Benedict XVI resides.

Bruni remarked, "We pray with him for Pope Emeritus."

Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation due to his health declining because of old age on February 11, 2013, and it took effect on February 28, 2013, at 20:00 CET. - With inputs from Vatican News
