Pope urges ecological and social action ahead of COP30

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Laudato si’, Pope Leo XIV addressed the Network of Universities for the Care of Our Common Home with a video message, encouraging their synodal discernment ahead of United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP30).
The message was delivered to participants gathered at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where he praised their commitment to ecological reflection. He highlighted the importance of reconciling public debt with ecological debt — a theme emphasized in his recent message for the World Day of Peace.
“This Jubilee Year is a year of hope,” Leo XIV said, inviting young people to pursue their mission with faith and optimism.
In a special message to university rectors, the pope expressed his support for their role as bridge builders, urging them to foster integration “between the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula” and to champion efforts for ecological, social, and environmental justice.
Leo XIV concluded his message by thanking all participants for their commitment and encouraging them to “keep building bridges” in the spirit of synodality, care for creation, and global solidarity.
The COP30 is a yearly global climate change summit that takes place in Belém, Brazil from Nov 10-21, 2025. It's a forum for world leaders, scientists, NGOs, and people from civil society to deliberate on how to deal with climate change. Its goal is to improve global collaboration and agreement on how to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
