The General Secretariat of the Synod has extended a heartfelt message of gratitude and support to Pope Leo XIV, following his recent election as the new Bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter.

In a letter dated May 12, 2025, the Synod Secretariat expressed its joy and readiness to walk alongside the Holy Father in service to the universal Church.

“As the one who presides over this Secretariat, we express from this moment our joy at walking together, supporting your service to the communion among all the Churches,” the letter reads.

Signed by Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, along with Bishop Luis Marín de San Martín, O.S.A. and Sr. Nathalie Becquart, X.M.C.J., the letter emphasizes the continuing journey of the Synod as a dynamic, Spirit-led process aimed at fostering a missionary and listening Church.

The Synodal journey, convened by Pope Francis in 2021, began with widespread consultation of the People of God and culminated in the XVI General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.

Pope Francis approved the Final Document from the Assembly, which outlines directions that local Churches can already begin implementing in context-specific ways. The accompanying note to the document highlights the need for further formation in “the style proper to the missionary synodal Church.”

As the Church now moves forward under the guidance of Pope Leo XIV, the Synod Secretariat expressed confidence in his leadership to guide the Church in becoming a community marked by listening, inclusivity, and missionary zeal.

“We look with confidence to the directions You will indicate,” the letter states, “to help the Church grow as a community attentive to listening, close to each person, capable of authentic and welcoming relationships—a home and family of God open to all.”

The Secretariat also reaffirmed its full availability to collaborate with the Pope in this ongoing synodal process, offering its service in a spirit of communion and obedience.

This message of support underscores the Church’s continued commitment to synodality as a path of renewal and shared mission in today’s world.
