Bangladesh: Rajshahi Diocese Marks 59th World Communications Day

The Diocese of Rajshahi in Bangladesh commemorated the 59th World Communications Day with a vibrant three-day program that combined faith, media, and youth empowerment at the Christo Jyoti Pastoral Centre from May 30 to June 1.

The Diocesan Commission for Social Communications organized the program with the theme, "Share with humility the hope in your heart."

The celebration blended inspirational talks, spiritual reflections, and hands-on training to nurture a new generation of communicators grounded in truth, compassion, and responsibility.

The event brought together around 35 young people from across the diocese for a celebration that was both reflective and forward-looking.

Bishop Gervas Rozario, chairman of the Diocesan Social Communications Commission, opened the event with a powerful message. "Our world—and our country—is facing deep challenges and confusion," he said. "In such darkness, we must be a bearer of light. Let the flame Christ lit continue to burn brightly in your life. Use technology — but don’t let it use you."

Distinguished guests included Dr. Mohammad Sazzad Hossain Bokul, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Rajshahi, who emphasized the timeless value of communication.

"Since ancient times, human civilization has depended on communication. While our tools have changed, our need for truth and dialogue remains constant," he noted. "Pope Francis' call to share with humility is not only for Christians — it’s a universal challenge to speak honestly in a fragmented world."

Father Nikhil Gomes, coordinator of the Radio Veritas Asia Bengali Service, echoed the importance of responsible media.

"Misusing communication platforms — particularly the spread of fake news — has become a threat. We must all be vigilant and committed to truth-telling," Father Gomes urged.

A highlight of the event was the Writers’ Workshop, where participants explored the craft of ethical journalism and effective communication. Sessions were led by respected media professionals and clergy, including Fr. Dilip S. Costa, Mr. Kalim Uddin from Rajshahi Radio, journalist Abu Saleh Fattah from Channel I, and Fr. Sagor Corraya, director of the Pastoral Center.

Topics ranged from Christian Bengali literature and proper language use to navigating journalism’s modern-day challenges.

Participant Sanchita Corraya shared her experience: "I’m truly grateful for this workshop. I’ve learned so much that I didn’t know before. Even if we don’t become journalists, this training will help us in many aspects of life."

In his closing remarks, Fr. Corraya encouraged participants to apply what they’ve learned.

"You’ve received valuable training — now put it into practice. If you remain committed, you can accomplish something significant," he said.

With a spirit of learning, dialogue, and hope, the Diocese of Rajshahi's celebration of World Communications Day made a lasting impression — planting seeds for a more informed, connected, and compassionate society.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
