Church Leaders Trained to Strengthen Safeguarding Efforts Across Bangladesh
The Commission for Integral Human Development of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh (CBCB) organized a Safeguarding Focal Points Training Workshop at the RNDM Sisters’ Renewal Centre in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, from June 11 to 12.
The two-day workshop was held under the theme, “Strengthening Capacity for Building a Safe, Accountable, and Dignified Society.” Participants from various dioceses across Bangladesh took part in the program.
The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance the knowledge, skills, and capacities of diocesan safeguarding focal persons and committee members in ensuring the protection of children and vulnerable adults within the Church’s pastoral and social ministries.
The opening session began with a prayer led by Fr. Liton H. Gomes, CSC, secretary of the commission. Bishop Gervas Rozario, president of the commission, delivered the welcome address. In his remarks, he stated, “Safeguarding is not merely a policy; it is a Gospel-based commitment to protecting human dignity and fostering safe communities.”
Throughout the workshop, participants received comprehensive training on the fundamental principles of safeguarding, the roles and responsibilities of focal persons, complaint reception and response mechanisms, documentation and record-keeping, investigation and case management procedures, group case studies, and the development of diocesan action plans.
Safeguarding focal persons and committee members from different dioceses actively engaged in the sessions. Through discussions, experience-sharing, and the analysis of practical situations, participants reaffirmed their commitment to building safe, accountable, and dignified Church communities.
Among the key achievements of the workshop were a deeper understanding of safeguarding policies, enhanced competencies in reporting and investigation processes, strengthened collaboration among dioceses, and the formulation of practical action plans tailored to local contexts.
During the closing session, participants expressed their gratitude to the CBCB Commission for Integral Human Development for organizing this important initiative.
The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering a culture of protection, care, and safeguarding within the Catholic Church in Bangladesh.
