The Dynamic Indonesian Catholic Church Inspires the Revival of Europe’s Church, Says Papal Nuncio

The outgoing Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia, Archbishop Piero Pioppo, delivered a heartfelt message to Indonesian Catholics, saying that his eight years of pastoral and diplomatic service in the country have strengthened his spirit as he prepares to begin his new mission as the Holy See’s envoy to Spain and Andorra later this week.

“I wish to express my deep gratitude to all the Indonesian bishops and the warm, smiling faithful of this beautiful nation for their kindness and hospitality throughout my eight-year tenure as the Vatican’s representative in Jakarta,” Archbishop Pioppo said in his address to 374 participants of the 5th National Assembly of the Indonesian Catholic Church (SAGKI – Sidang Agung Gereja Katolik Indonesia), which began on November 3 in North Jakarta.

Speaking before 41 bishops, both active and emeritus, Archbishop Pioppo praised the vibrancy and dynamism of the Indonesian Church.

“The lively faith and missionary spirit of Indonesian Catholics have greatly encouraged me,” he said. “As I begin my new diplomatic mission in Spain and Andorra, I will carry with me the enthusiasm and joy of faith that I have witnessed here.”

Reflecting on his European roots, Archbishop Pioppo noted that Spain has historically sent missionaries to many countries, including Indonesia.

“It is inspiring for me personally,” he said, “to see how the seeds of faith planted by European missionaries have flourished so beautifully here. The vitality of the Indonesian Church will serve as an inspiration for the renewal of the Church in Europe, which is often perceived as aging and in decline.”

“I am truly happy and grateful to be here with hundreds of Indonesian Catholics for the opening of your 5th SAGKI,” he added.

“As you know, Pope Leo XIV has appointed me to a new mission in Spain, a deeply Catholic country that has produced countless saints and missionaries, many of whom once journeyed to your land, Indonesia. Now, as I leave this vibrant Church, I am filled with hope that your youthful faith and great enthusiasm will inspire new life in the Church of Europe.”

He concluded: “Let us pray together during this 5th SAGKI that the Lord will continue to guide our journey as His pilgrim people.”
