Government, Catholic Bishops Discuss Sri Lanka’s 2026 Education Reforms

Sri Lankan bishops meet government officials to discuss 2026 education reforms on August 7, 2025.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka (CBCSL) met with top government officials on August 7 to discuss sweeping education reforms set for 2026.

The meeting, held at the Colombo Archdiocese’s official residence, was attended by CBCSL President Bishop Harold Anthony Perera, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, and bishops from across the country.

Sri Lanka has one archdiocese and 11 dioceses, operating numerous educational institutions from primary schools to higher education.

Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, along with Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewe, outlined plans to shift from exam-focused learning to a module-based system aimed at improving quality, inclusivity, and future-readiness.

Key reforms include updated curricula, enhanced teacher training, revised assessment methods to reduce student stress, and stronger educational planning at national, provincial, and zonal levels. Early childhood education will also come under full ministry oversight.

The reforms will be supported by the National Education Policy Framework 2023–2033 and the Supporting Secondary Education Sector Improvement Program (SESIP), benefiting teachers and students nationwide.
