Hong Kong cardinal on Pope Leo XIV: ‘He will not forget the Chinese people’

The cardinal from Hong Kong expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV will further strengthen communication and dialogue with the Chinese Catholic Church, a direction set by his predecessor, Pope Francis.
In an interview with Kung Kao Pao, the official publication of the Diocese of Hong Kong, Cardinal Stephan Chow said that he sees the newly elected pontiff to “take into account the multicultural nature of Asia.”
“Pope Leo XIV is the man the cardinals considered good for the Church and for the world,” said Chow. “The cardinals have elected a pope who willingly listens.”
The cardinal noted how the pope is already familiar with Chinese culture and reality as he has visited the country several times prior to his election.
He said that he sees the Holy Father as a strong voice that will amplify the voices of the vulnerable.
Chow pledged his support to “collaborate in the pope’s mission” to accompany the marginalized and the weak.
The Jesuit cardinal of Hong Kong was elevated to the College of Cardinals on the same consistory as then-Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on September 30, 2023.
Chow shared how he approached the new pope right after his election and offered him a statue of Our Lady of Sheshan.
“Please don’t forget the church in China and the Chinese people!” Cardinal Chow recalled his words to the new pontiff.
