Imphal Archdiocese Organizes Silent Rally on Creation Care, Echoing Laudato Si’

Students in Singngat, Manipur, hold a silent rally and seminar on ecology and drug abuse awareness, August 1, 2025.

A silent rally and environmental awareness seminar focusing on ecological protection and drug abuse was held on August 1, 2025, in Singngat, a town in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur.

Hundreds of students from St. Joseph High School marched through the streets carrying placards promoting environmental stewardship and the fight against substance abuse. The event was organized by the Archdiocese of Imphal in collaboration with the Churachandpur Forest Division of the Government of Manipur.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si', the program brought together a wide array of dignitaries, including Rev. Fr. Denis Ngaopu, Procurator of the Archdiocese of Imphal; Samuel Lhungdim, Sub-Divisional Officer of Singngat; James Lianjagou, Officer-in-Charge; Gouchungnung, Deputy Forest Ranger; along with priests, nuns, and other government officials.

In his keynote address, SDO Samuel Lhungdim, serving as the event’s chief guest, expressed deep concern about the growing drug problem in the region. “It is saddening that even Singngat is not spared from the drug menace,” he said. “This is a serious issue that could take deep root in our society.”

He also cautioned strongly against the cultivation of poppies, warning: “Though it may seem like an easy source of income, in the long run, it brings only destruction and no real benefit.”

The year 2025 marks both the Jubilee Year of Laudato Si' and the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures. The Laudato Si' Movement encourages Catholics around the world to embark on ecological pilgrimages and take action for environmental justice within their communities.

Deputy Forest Ranger emphasized reducing plastic usage and urged students to influence change at home. “Tell your parents to use reusable bags instead of plastic. Let’s cut down on plastic in every way possible,” he said, adding, “Start kitchen gardens at home.”

On the issue of poppy farming, he reiterated: “It will ultimately destroy everything, our land, our people, our future.”

A highlight of the event was a student exhibition on environmental themes, which received high praise from the attending dignitaries and school faculty.

Rooted in the values of Laudato Si', the event reminded participants that care for creation is not only a moral obligation but also a theological one. Pope Francis teaches that creation is a divine gift, and protecting it is an act of love and stewardship.

To symbolically conclude the event, all special guests participated in a tree-planting ceremony, an expression of hope and shared responsibility for the Earth.

The day ended with a united pledge by students, teachers, and guests to protect the environment and stand firmly against drug abuse.

This collaborative initiative in Singngat stands as a model for other parishes and communities, embodying the Church’s mission to care for our common home in light of the Gospel.
